In the spotlight with Jack Nelson - from Nelson Ops

We caught up with Jack Nelson...

We caught up with Mosaic Member, Jack Nelson who runs Nelson Ops. Jack delivers paid media campaigns (On Facebook, Instagram etc…) for companies as well as supporting marketing agencies.

When Jack graduated from Central Saint Martins, he went on to work for a London-based digital agency, in his role as a senior accounts manager he had a hands-on approach by getting stuck in on anything from website builds to search engine optimisation.

After some time in London, Jack recalls the feeling of being burnt out and stressed with his life in London. So headed back to Lincolnshire, where he grew up.  Going back to some freelance work from old employers and enjoying the tube-free commute!

“My life in London wasn’t very rock and roll, unfortunately!”

From these early clients momentum grew and Jack niched down towards online advertising focused on lead generation.

“Soon being self-employed stopped feeling like a stopgap for a ‘proper’ job.”

That’s when Jack joined us, he was sick of working from home (which turned out so were many more people after the COVID pandemic).  Being at Mosaic in a coworking space is the in-between he needed. Chance to speak with like-minded business owners, bounce ideas off one another and develop.

“Working in the centre of Lincoln means it's easy to host meetings here or meet up with people after work too.”

After a lucrative 2022, Jack is becoming more active in finding clients who line up with his own passions. Sometimes that might mean saying no to opportunities to keep space available for the right partnership. He’s particularly interested in organisations working in sustainability, ecology and AI.

“I was never a guy that was obsessed about business from an early age so thinking about things from a business development point of view is a really exciting learning curve for me.”

With Mental Health being on all our agendas after the past couple of years, Jack is pleased to say his mental health has improved after struggling with this in the past and even says it has been one of his biggest challenges in business. Managing his workload has been the key to improving his mental health.

“I know I’ll get more done in the long run if I make space for my mental health”

Jack's biggest achievement to date is when freelance stopped being a stopgap and became a career path. Since this Jack has worked with several clients including beatBreadTerravestaVirgin StartUp and an unannounced generative AI company. He also works for key accounts for agencies Goldfish and Carrington Communications based in London and Lincoln respectively.

“Working with the local community, whether that be advertising for local businesses or being at Mosaic, is something I will continue to enjoy.”

Jack’s advice for anyone thinking of taking this road is to guard your own time, it’s easy to take on too much because you’re scared of missing out.

“It is important to put your health before the work and your financial growth if you can afford to do so.”

Jack gave us three words to describe Mosaic, Cool, community & collaboration. – Yeh we agree, Mosaic is pretty cool!
